  • Been using N scale for a while, but my eyes are not getting younger. So I made a decision: Make my N-scale ambitions lesser. A 150 x 75 cm scenario that is easy to remove from my kitchen bench and put away when I need to. R1 is forbidden, I use minimum R2 (because of my steam locos), and long passenger coaches is also forbidden. Going to sell it all, and keep the short stuff.

So I plunged back into H0 scale. Right now my living room is only for me, as I have a Rocoline 4,5m x 1,8m track system on the floor. Minimum R9. Two NMJ trains at traffic there for the time being. I'm planning systems with Anyrail, and will do everyting to get it all upp from the floor, and along walls instead. I cannot do this where I live now - but I can learn and plan for the future.

My first purchase was this Paradepferd, the new Trix BR 103-152-5. 750 grams of heavy locomotive. From the 60's and up, I have ridden many trains pulled by this one, in all colours you can think of.

    So N or H0? - both, please.

  • So N or H0? Having both is more expensive. I have a large HO scale layout. Without saying I regret it (because I have everything in fully digital Märklin), I often think I should have chosen N scale. I have all the digital BR 103s with a minimum of 16 functions (including the 150th anniversary one with 32 functions).

With HO scale, you can limit yourself to one manufacturer. I've stuck with 90% Märklin and 10% Roco with a Central Station 3. For N scale, I find there's less documentation and no 3-rail solution, which prevents reversing loops.

  • I have a medium large HO Maerklin lay- out. It often crossed my mind to change to N. But being 79 i am glad i did not change to N

    Larger scales are to expensive.

To my regrets did Maerklin not made a change to TT scale. In my opinion is that the most practicle scale.

With 45 locs is a change a no go.

Whenn I am to old en my house is to small I can than change to the Z scale wiht a Noch track in a attache case :)

  • Yes, having both scales is for shure more expensive, but these days I can afford it. I gave up H0 when I was a student, living in a small flat. I could only display what I had and not drive it. When finished studying and moving back home, starting to make money short after, I realized Fleischmann and Minitrix was the way to go, with sound locos and short couplings (already as a six-year old I reacted to the unreal distance between coaches). So I built a 210 x 120 cm N scenario, and enjoyed it bigtime. But I could not handle it alone, in order to stove it away when having guests now and then.

I now live in a flat that has dark wood-like planks on the floor. So there's the Rocoline, and the nice thing about that is that you can step on it without breaking anything. Having guests I remove all trains of course.

Right now I am painting/finishing my 160x75 N scenario in my bedroom. Purchased a so-called "hobby-plate". After cutting it is 160 x 60 cm, R2 in each corner. Perfect for my BR23, BR44, BR211 Altrot and BR218 Altrot. Using those green "umbauwagen" as maximum length coaches, and it looks good from a distance.

I like the thought of TT scale, has seen a long train in that scale a very long time ago. I also love those Z scale tracks in a suitcase, but the price is scary.

I love all the scales mentioned here. Pic shows my 160 x 600 (to be augumented from 60 cm to 75 cm) N-system being built.
