Coming soon for Train Simulator 2012: DB Class 218! Introduced in 1971, the Class 218 diesel-hydraulic locomotive was a mainstay of Deutsche Bundesbahn’s passenger and freight services for 20 years. The 218’s versatility and relative simplicity soon made it ubiquitous across the network and nearly 400 examples were produced. Unlike a typical diesel-electric locomotive which uses diesel power to generate electric current to power traction motors, the Class 218 used its single diesel engine to drive a hydraulic transmission. The Class 218 had a low gear setting suitable for freight workings, coupled with a top speed of 140km/h (86mph) suitable for passenger duties, which made the type useful for hauling passenger trains outside of the electrified network.
