I use the XBox 360 controller which the game officially supports. It is cheap and can be used for the main driving functions, camera views and a few other things. I still use the keyboard for PZB, AWS, all advanced functionality etc. Not sure whether assigning buttons to specific functions is possible - never tried.
The main benefit is an ergonomic one - the controller sits on your lap which makes playing TS less tiring on your arms then when it rests on the keyboard / mouse all the time. It is also more relaxing with the controller.
Some trains do not support the controller at all and in that case I just use the keyboard. But these tend to be exceptions.
There are also far more advanced controller versions on the market, but for my needs the XBox 360 controller is totally fine.
How about SIFA? Is that supported?
No, at least not out of the box. What is supported is the standard 'Q' command, e.g. for AWS in the UK. But that works only on standard DTG stock, not e.g. on AP stock.
I've been using a Logitech Joypad in conjunction with JoyToKey for years. This works perfectly.
