January 2018 Update: After delays along the line, the MRCE Dispolok Pack is back on track!
Coming soon to Train Simulator – the action-heavy MRCE Dispolok Pack will bring powerful locomotives and hefty freight to dramatic life!
Following the turn of the 21st Century, a handful of Siemens’ locomotives, which had recently been shipped to their buyers, were returned owing to technical issues found upon entrance into service. While not ideal, Siemens took it in their stride to repair the faults and ensure the locomotives were ready for service proper, and to avoid working at a loss, took full advantage of the European rail transport deregulation.
The deregulation would allow the leasing of traction and rolling stock to newly-formed private companies, instead of them having to purchase and maintain such stock outright. It was this that saw Siemens set up “Dispolok”, a locomotive-leasing division that would put their returned traction to profitable use. The project was a success, and soon more locomotives would be built specifically with leasing in mind.
Before long however, Siemens, who was retiring from the leasing business, reached an agreement for Mitsui Rail Capital Europe to acquire the brand in 2006. By this point, around 100 locomotives were in the Yellow & Grey Dispolok brand, and MRCE added to that by ordering from Siemens around the time of their acquirement of the brand. Two years later, and the company was renamed to MRCE Dispolok, which saw a new Black livery added to locomotives. The brand was further changed to MRCE GmbH in 2013.
Over the years, a multitude of locomotive types have been leased by MRCE/Dispolok to provide operators a reliable choice of traction, that is able to put down as much power required for any duty. The fleet includes Siemens’ very own ES 64 F, F4 and U2 electric locomotives, and their ER20 Eurorunners. Additionally, EMD JT42CWR’s have been a recent popular addition, this locomotive is better known as the EMD Class 66, a Europe-wide favourite with over 650 produced.
The MRCE Dispolok Pack, which is coming soon Train Simulator, will feature:
- EuroSprinter ES 64 F in Dispolok livery
- EuroSprinter ES 64 F4 in MRCE Dispolok livery
- EuroSprinter RS 64 U2 ‘Taurus’ in Dispolok livery
- ER20 Eurorunner in Dispolok livery
- EMD JT42CWR ‘Class 66’ in MRCE livery
- Habbins, Simmns & Zags 122 wagons
- A trio of career scenarios for the Mannheim to Karlsruhe route
Watch this space for updates as the MRCE Dispolok Pack nears closer! ■
Popular throughout Europe, particularly in Germany and Austria, the ES 64 U2 of the “EuroSprinter” family serves as a very powerful freight locomotive capable of an astounding 230 km/h. These locomotives are commonly known as the ‘Taurus’, as christened by ÖBB, and are famous for their unique “melodic” three-phase motor sequence.
Relatives to the “EuroSprinter”, the “Eurorunner” shares many design characteristics with their electric brethren, but are set apart by their diesel power which allows them to go across any network. Several models of the Eurorunner exist, however 15 ER20s were built for Dispolok leasing in the mid-2000s. The ER20 can produce 2700 hp, perfect for a multitude of freight duties.
Back to the “EuroSprinter” family, the ‘U’ in ES 64 U2 stands for ‘Universal’, meaning the locomotive is equally capable of both passenger and freight use. Siemens also offered the ES 64 F4, as seen above, where the ‘F’ denotes freight-only operation, and beyond that, the latter ‘4’ represents how many rail systems this 87 ton powerhouse can be used on in Europe.
Finally for Siemens, the ES 64 F was the first in the “EuroSprinter” line, after the prototype of course, and they were capable of 140 km/h and could deliver on demand. We can now deduce that ‘F’ means this is a freight locomotive, and although they were fitted for passenger use, this was never taken advantage of. Additionally, no number means they are more restricted than their younger siblings.
A tale that started in Britain; the Class 66 was the modern successor to the Class 59, a locomotive of EMD design (dervied from the SD40-2) that was due to bring heavy hauling power to British freight. The success of the Class 66 quickly spread, and under the product name ‘JT42CWR’, EMD took orders from European companies who were keen to open tabs and get their hands on some “Sheds”. Out of the 650+ locomotives built, 23 went to MRCE for leasing purposes.
Collectively on-screen, the MRCE Dispolok Pack represents over 21’000 Kilowatts of power output (the equivalent of 28’000+ horsepower), and all that will soon to be yours to control in Train Simulator!
