When CSX was first formed in 1986 by the merger of the Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Railroads, the intention was to have a new company-wide gray livery. However, cost and time considerations led them instead simply to carry forward the C&O/Chessie's blue and yellow, so not many cars were ever painted gray.
