RSSLO Voith Maxima 40CC V4 Sound Release V1.00
Sound enhancement - by AleksJNORD - Gainmaster
OK guys V4 is out
Nearly every evening since V3 have been working on it.
Listening to RSSLO's stock sounds, my own Tug samples both Bergen Diesel and Voith Schneider Tugs and almost every video on Youtube.
(It was a _lot_ of work)
I will talk about the Sound and Game specifics and how i did it later in this post.
Technical/Foreword:
Since i have been working with Diesel engines there is a lot of technical talk from me before i get to the game specifics. I believe that understanding what i am working on be it virtual or real is important.
I talked about the Voith Maxima being a Hydraulic Locomotive with a giant pump. This pump (my mistake) is the Gearbox that is always connected via a massive shaft.
In my WIP post i posted a Voith Hydraulic Gearbox sample from a bus, pitched down to more closely match the massive gearbox ;
Voith Turbo Technic - Turbo LS 640 Re Turbo-Split. (Up to 4200kw input)
It takes the power from the 3600kw 255L ABC (Marine engine) DZC 16 and transfers it internally through a fluid filled Torque Converter to Mechanical power driving both bogies via large driveshafts with U-Joints. Very high traction compared to electrical motors at the wheels. I dont have the exact power loss figures for the Maxima but compared to Stadler Eurodual the torque converter eats up some of the power at the wheels. So what is the difference between the two and their engines ? the Caterpillar C175-16 is a fairly new engine designed primarily as a Generator for maximum efficiency. 84.6 Litres. 2800kw.
And to the Game specific on this release:
Instead of going into a custom direction i knew i was going to try and match how the Locomotive sounds in real life as cloase as possible.
Getting help from the Bergen Diesel V16's and Voith Schneider V12 Tug samples i have for mostly Bass and Turbo's.
When i started the V4 project i had two parallell projects, one for inside and one for the outside. This was like trying to climb a very steep hill without any equipment.
I came to the conclusion that getting the outside as good as possible would be easier.
There are no Youtube videos with a microphone attached to the roof of the Maxima so i had to work around this problem. Enter Bergen Diesel and Voith ABC tugs, Bass line is quite close to the real thing now.
There are some good videos of the Locomotive at Idle and Top speed, to get the finer exhaust tones in the middle i had to break down the sound samples.
Some of them are 30 times as long as the start point. Audacity and 8 Tracks/samples from different parts to make up one Sample ? Yes..
Game Specific Details:
Motor_start (Source Gainmaster): Remade, i have the full ABC start squence but as soon as the engine hits 380 rpm the idle starts looping so it is cut down abit to link up with Gainmasters Motor_start.
Motor_1 RSSLO influenced, heavily modified, stretched to be loopable with new Engine beat synced in.
Motor_2 RSSLO influenced, heavily modified, just the exhaust tone and general sound stage is left. stretched to be loopable with new Engine beat synced in.
Motor_3 Made from Scratch.
Motor_4 Made from Scratch.
Idle_Off (Source Gainmaster) A tad more cooling is there, cleaned up and cut for loopabillity.

Lubrication is a story in itself, took days of work untill it felt right.
The sound sample is 60 seconds exactly as reality but the game cuts at exactly 40 seconds into the sound before firing the engine.
Voith Turbo LS 640 re turbo-split transmission:
The transmission has been sampled into the sounds, i thought i would make 2 versions but the version with it was superior (subtle).
I have the masters and can release an even higher volume gearbox sound if you have a driving desk for example and would like inside sounds made from these.. No problem.
What is left of the Tug samples ? If you have a subwoofer and feel the room shaking the lower bass you dont normally hear in games is both Voith Schneider ABC V12/V16 Bergen diesel Tugboats.
