Designated Class 406, the ICE 3M is the next step in the Siemens Valero range from the ICE 3 (class 403). The ICE 3M is the first German high-speed Inter City Express trainset of the range to be used on international revenue services. It is also the first ICE to be used by an operator other than DB, with sets being operated by the Dutch National rail network NS. Operated by DB, the ICE 3MF sub-varient also operates international services between France and Germany.
The ICE 3 is the first of the ICE series to operate as a true electric multiple unit, with traction being provided by 16 motors on 8 of the units' bogies rather than via locomotives at each end of the train. The ICE 3M and 3MF are able to operate across multiple European railway systems, power is supplied via pantographs for a choice of AC and DC overhead cables of different voltages.
